What Is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a process that can be completed in several steps. A product is cleaned and prepared for coating in the first step of the coating process. After applying the powder, the surface is covered with a fine layer. The powder covers the surface of the part. In the last step, the product is moved to the curing oven.

The product is heated in an oven, which melts the powder and causes it to flow into a uniform coating that sticks to the part. When the molten powder cools and hardens, it forms a durable and attractive coating around the product.

What Kinds of Equipment Are Required for Powder Coating Systems?

There are a few different types of equipment that are needed for powder coating systems. Some of the equipment needed for a powder coating system includes a coating gun, a powder hopper, an oven, and a supply of powder coatings.

Powder Coating Process

To get the best results from your powder coating process, your product must be free of dust, debris, oil, rust, old paint, or finish materials. The adhesion and durability of the powder will be affected by anything left on the product prior to coating. This is where pre-treatment comes in handy. Pretreatment equipment is used before your product is ever powder-coated. This equipment is designed to ensure that the best quality of powder is applied.

If the product you want to powder coat has a lot of debris (rust, laser scale, pre-existing paint), you may need to use a blast room. A blast room is a place where you use compression materials to spread friction material against the surface of your parts. 

When cleaning a metal surface, you can use blast media (grit) or steel shot to damage any unwanted debris and clean the metal surface. If you’re working with materials that aren’t perfect, the blast room can be a great place to work. It contains areas where oxidation or welding residues may be present.

If any oils, solvents, or chemical residues cover any part of the surface of your products, you may want to consider using a wash station. A wash station that gives you the opportunity to wash your parts with detergent and/or a chemical pretreatment agent, such as iron phosphate. Cleaning with hot water or steam is a common way to get the job done.

A wash station can help improve the adhesion of the powder and the quality of the finish on already blasted parts. Some wash stations require you to apply the chemistry manually using a spray wand. It can be possible. Other washers use automatic parts that go through cleaning, rinsing, and prepping steps.

Powder coating is a very useful process, but there are always ways to improve its results. Depending on the equipment you use, a basic system may suffice. While we cannot stress enough the importance of surface cleaning prior to powder application, entry-level expensive pretreatment equipment is not mandatory for coating operations that do not require manual cleaning (such as with sticky wipes and solvents). 

Harmful Effects From Powder Coating Plant

Powder coating can lead to occupational asthma and health effects such as skin irritation and skin sensitivity, but the powder itself is not as dangerous as solvent-containing volatile paint. The product falls under the standard for spraying flammable materials, including powders, set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

To maintain a safe level of airborne powder inside the spray area, the spray must be produced in high volumes and with high wind speeds. It is generally recommended that you travel at least 60 feet per minute (FPM) when using the booth, but exceeding 100 FPM is often more beneficial. To prevent dust from accumulating in the ductwork, the system must have high airflow.

One of the main advantages of cartridge filters is that they operate with compressed air, which means they can be cleaned easily. Dust outside the filter affects the image. It removes elements that should not be removed, such as dust and other small particles.
